When the Greek hero Cadmus was attempting to found the city of Thebes, all of his men were killed by a dragon they encountered. Although Cadmus managed to slay the dragon, he was left without help, until Athena told him to sow the dragon's teeth into the ground. As soon as this was accomplished, each tooth sprouted and grew into a fully armed warrrior. These soldiers were known as the Sparti, and they fought amongst themselves until only the five strongest remained. These five Sparti remained with Cadmus, helping him to found the city.
