In Egyptian mythology, Seth (also spelled Set, Seteh or Sutekh) is a chief deity governing storms, the desert, infertility and chaos. He was the son of Nut and Geb, brother of Osiris and Isis, and father of Anubis. He is also the patron of the colour red, inluding red haired people, and of foreigner. He has been depicted as an unknown beast with a curved snout, forked tail, and a canine's body although it was said he was a shapeshifter and could become a ferocious serpent, dragon, or turtle.
One of the most famous tales of Seth regards his conflict with his brother Osiris. In this, Osiris was a wise and benevolent king who was married to his beautiful sister, Isis. Set was still young and envious of all that his brother had, and eventually killed him and dismembered his body. Despite Seth's attempts to keep Isis from completing his funerary rights, she was able to help Osiris pass on and become ruler of the Afterworld and was even able to conceive a son with him before he left. Isis hid away in fear that Seth would try to kill her baby, and raised him to become the sky god Horus.
There were many battles fought between Seth and Horus and at one point Seth was even able to damage Horus' eye so badly that it lost its brightness and became the moon. However, although the details are sketchy, Seth and Horus had apparently reached an agreement and their representative lands were joined as one. He was even credited with protecting Horus from the chaotic serpent Apep. Every night before daybreak Seth would slay the serpent to allow the sun to rise and a new day to begin.
