The Rukh (or Roc) is a giant bird of pray in Arabian legend. It is usually described as being a white, eagle-like bird that is so large it can carry off an entire elephant. The Rukh was said to live in the Indian Ocean, where it lived on a small uncharted island. It would capture elephants in its talons and carry them high into the sky, where it would drop them so they would be smashed to pieces, allowing the bird to feast on it at its own leisure. Tales would also tell of the Rukh attacking and destroying ships, usually in retaliation for the sailors breaking or stealing one of its eggs. One such event takes place in the fifth voyage of Sinbad the Sailor, where his crewmen foolishly break open the egg of a Rukh and feast on the chick inside. Sinbad attempts to vacate the island quickly when he realises the folly of his men, but the parent birds return before they can escape. The birds then proceed to drop massive boulders on the ship, leaving Sinbad and the surviving crewmen shipwrecked.
