[edit] About
Magatama are curved beads which first appeared in Japan during the Jōmon period. They are commonly found throughout traditional Japanese culture. Maga means curved; Tama is soul, bean in Japanese. But Atlus twisted the meaning of Maga to unfortunate and disaster.

[edit] In-game
Magatamas are parasites ( perhaps a more appropriate term would be 'symbiotes' since the magatama do not merely take sustenance from their host, they give power in exchange as well ) which turn human hosts into demons. They serve as special equipment for the protagonist of Nocturne - Hito-Shura. There are 25 Magatamas in total which offer Hito-Shura different resistances or weaknesses.
During level-ups they may provide a new skill for him to learn. Sometimes they go wild when Hito-Shura grows stronger. The effects will vary depending on the kind of Magatama ingested: Hito-Shura will be fully healed (alone or with his current summoned party), suffer a random status ailment or become cursed.
Magatama names are patterned after different myths or characters.
[edit] Trivia
- According to a development screen shot of Nocturne, it seems that the game creators originally intended to call it Devil Heart (デヴルハート) instead of Magatama.
