[edit] About

Cu Chulainn was a warrior in Irish mythology and the hero of Ulster. His given name at birth was Setanta, however he later changed it to Cu Chulainn to atone for his killing of the fierce watchdog of Culainn, his new name literally meaning "Hound of Culann". It is said that while in battle Cu Chulainn was near undefeatable due to his skill with the Gae Bulg and his warrior frenzy, which once evoked increased his power, but made him unable to tell friend from foe.

In his youth he was said to be so handsome that the men of Ulster feared that, without a bride, he could easily steal their wives. Many potential brides were presented to Cu Chulainn, however he would settle for none other than Emer, the daughter of Forgall. Forgall was strongly opposed to their marriage, and so told Cu Chulainn they could not marry until he had completed his training as a warrior. And so Cu Chulainn and his good friend Ferdiad traveled to the fortress of shadows, Dun Scaith where the warrior maiden Scathach taught them great feats of arms, then gave Cu Chulainn his famous and powerful barbed spear, Gae Bulg. Meanwhile, Forgall offered the hand of Emer to the king of Munster, Lugaid. However once Lugaid heard that she was in love with Cu Chulainn, he refused.

During his time training under Scathach, Cu Chulainn had an affair with her daughter Uathach, that was discovered by Uathach's lover Cochar Croibhe. Cochar Croibhe challenged him to a duel, which Cu Chulainn easily won, and to make amends agreed to marry Uathach. He eventually slept with Scathach as well when his training was almost complete. Around this time Scathach's arch rival Aífe attacked and Scathach, fearing for Cu Chulainn's life, gave him a powerful sleeping potion to keep him from the battle. However, due to his incredible strength, it only put him to sleep for an hour, and he soon joined the fight. He faced Aífe in single combat, and they seemed evenly matched, however he was able to distract Aífe and seized her. Cu Chulainn agreed to spare her life if she would make peace with Scathach, and that she bear him a son.

Cu Chulainn left Scotland fully trained soon after and returned to Ulster to claim the hand of Emer, however Forgall still refused to allow the marriage. Enraged, Cu Chulainn stormed Forgall's fortress, killed twenty-four of Forgall's men, stole his treasure, and abducted Emer. Forgall himself also met his doom, as he fell from the ramparts to his death.

At seventeen Cu chulainn defended Ulster single-handedly against the army of Connacht led by Medb as the men of Ulster were disabled by a terrible curse. He defeated champion after champion and eventually drove the armies of Medb out.

Seven years after marrying Emer, Cu Chulainn's son by Aífe, Connla, visited Ulster in search of his father. However, when Cu Chulainn saw the stranger and asked his name, Connla refused to answer and Cu Chulainn, mistaking him for an intruder, slew him.

While still at a very young age Cu Chulainn was to meet his fate. Medb joined forces with Fugaid and other sons of warriors who Cu Chulainn had killed to conspire against him, and draw him out to his death. One tale says that he was dishonoured when offered dog meat, as it conflicted with his vows to "never eat dog meat" and "eat anything offered to you" and he was killed by druids sent by the goddess Morrigan. Another story says that he was killed in battle by his rival Lugaid, or that Lugaid joined forces with him and assassinated him when he was weakened from breaking his vows.

There is also a tale that says it was his enemy Queen Maeve who conspired with sorcerers to kill him. An enchanted spear was thrown at him, and he was mortally wounded. However rather than just die, he was able to first tie himself to a rock in such a way it looked as if he were standing. No one would approach him and it wasn’t until the goddess Badb Catha transformed herself into a crow and landed on his shoulder that all present realized that he was finally dead.
