About
Bucca was originally the name of a Cornish fertility deity who was transformed by the post-pagan people in a natural spirit. In their later form they appeared as a kind of goblin that was associated with the wind blowing in from the South West. It was believed that their voices carried the wind and sailors would refer to it as "Bucca calling".
They where also sometimes considered a tin mining spirit similar to the Welsh Knockers. They leved within Cornish mines where they would grant wishes in exchange for food and knock on the mine's wall to indicate the location of metal veins or predict when a miner will die. Some sources suggest that they are the spirits of miners that died while inside the mines.
There were two well known forms of the Bucca; Bucca Widn the white Bucca, and Bucca Dhu the black Bucca. This seems to suggest a dualistic nature to the spirits. According to the Cornish writer William Bottrell, folktales of the Bucca suggested that Bucca Widn was a good spirit and Bucca Dhu was an evil spirit, the later now more commonly known as Bucca-boo.
The Bucca would eventually become known under other names such as the Bugbear or Bugaboo were tales described them as a kind of hobgoblin. The folklore behind them would usually be used as a way to frighten disobedient children into behaving. In medieval England for instance it was depicted as an terrible bear that lurked in the woodlands to chase after children. Today, the bugbear is often used to describe something that annoys or scares people.
In-game
- Strange Journey
An experimental demon that was originally a type of Welsh spirit known as the "bugbear", it became the subject of a modification experiment ordered by Mitra with the information gathered during his experiments on the crew of the Elve. The experiment was not a complete success, as Bugaboo was not loyal to Mitra, trying to escape on several occasions. During its last escape attempt, it was captured and being punished by Mitra's minion when Jimenez busted his way into the room and rescued him. Although Bugaboo was barely able to speak, it seemed to instantly find a kindered spirit in Jimenez, and readily became his demon. It quickly became a fiercely loyal ally and companion to Jimenez, placing his life before its own on several occasions and earning his respect.
When Jack's Squad created its HQ, Bugaboo sensed that something sinister was going on behind the scenes and warned Jimenez. Having faith in Bugaboo and feeling uneasy himself, Jimenez requested that he could stay behind as a spy to watch the squad's activities. Whilst he was on his mission to watch the squad, Bugaboo rushed off into their base with Jimenez following. What they found inside was demons being experimented on in bizarre, inhuman ways. The two of them tried to free the demons, but were captured and experimented on themselves. By the time the Protagonist reached them Bugaboo was already close to death, so to save him Jimenez cose to be fused together with him so that they might both survive.
As well as Bugaboo who is aligned with chaos, two other demons; the lawful Bagaboo and neutral Bogaboo can also be discoved ibs through special registered fusion. They also bare the scares of modification and appear to be victimes of Mitra's experiments in ibs. Their names are a simple play on phonics, where a single vowel is changed to create a new word, which is a popular but subtle gag in modern culture.
