About
Amo-no-Uzume is a Shinto deity still worshipped in Japan today. Her name means "Priestess of the marine resident". She is the goddess of the dawn and revelry, best known for coaxing Amaterasu from the cave, Ame-no-Iwato.
After the storm god Susanoo had lost a bet with his sister Amaterasu, he vandalised her property and killed one of her attendants. Amaterasu, out of fear, anger and grief retreated into a cave, and as Amaterasu was the goddess of the sun, this caused the Earth to be plunged into darkness.
Many of the gods tried to lure Amaterasu from the cave without success, until Uzume overturned a tub near the entrance and began to dance, tearing off all her clothing in front of the other deities. This was extremely funny to the deities and they all began to laugh at the sight of her.
Hearing the laughter, Amaterasu peered out of the cave to see what was going on. Upon opening the cave, she saw her reflection on a mirror Uzume had placed on a tree. Curious, Amaterasu emerged, and at that moment the deity Tajikarawo quickly blocked the entrance and the other deities convinced her to return light to the world.
In a later story when the grandson of Amaterasu, Ninigi no Mikoto, was prevented from going to the Earth by the god of pathways Sarutahiko, Uzume was the only deity willing to confront him. Uzume tore off her clothing and approached Sarutahiko, demanding that he allow passage to Ninigi. Sarutahiko was so impressed by Uzume that he agreed to let Ninigi go if Uzume would give him her hand in marriage. Uzume agreed and became the consort of Sarutahiko.
