[edit] About

In Hindu mythology, Airavata is Indra's elephant mount. He has four or six tusks and was born from the milky sea. Due to a curse, Airavata lost its early ability to fly. When Indra chose an elephant as his mount, rather than a more warlike creature, it symbolized the beginning of luxury for the war god.

[edit] In Mythology

Another variation is that Brahma chanted seven mantras over two halves of a cosmic egg and eight pure white elephants with four huge tusks were born from the half in his right hand, the first of which was Airatava. From the other half eight similar female elephants were created and he placed the sixteen at the eight cardinal compass points to support the weight of the earth in the universe.

In Vedic mythology Airavata was created out of the "Churning of the waters" at the beginning of time. The Pure White winged elephant was so beautiful Indra immediately acquired it as his war mount. When it flew it drained the waters of the earth and sprayed it back down as rain for human needs.
