A famous onmyouji from medieval Japan who served the emperors and the Heian government. Abe-no-Seimei was renown for being the most powerful onmyouji, and because of this he is a legendary figure in Japanese folklore. In legends, he was said to be born half-human and half-kitsune (fox spirit), and that he has even once commanded a weak Oni as a child.
In actual history, other than being Heian government's leading specialist of onmyodo Abe-no-Seimei was also an astrologist and predicted events based on astrological calculations. He enjoyed an extremely long life, free from any major illness, which contributed more to the popular belief that he had mystical powers. Even to this date there are shrines in Japan dedicated to Abe-no-Seimei, and there is a mercantile district in Osaka region known as Abenobashi Shotengai.
In Kyoto, there is a popular shrine named Seimei Shrine (晴明神社) built to honour him.
