=============================================================================== =============================================================================== SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IF... (SUPER FAMICOM VERSION) WALKTHROUGH/TRANSLATION v0.2 by Joseph Rodriguez (a.k.a Yoshitsune) (c) 2001 by Joseph Rodriguez Last updated 1/13/02 E-mail: jpr4c7@umkc.edu =============================================================================== =============================================================================== ...A tranquil day, like most days... ...Even boring, like most days... ...The days of youth are flowing along... If... it was destroyed? If... this school was thrown into a separate world? ...This... is the story of boys and girls who were suddenly thrust into the Demon World and are now lost... Shin Megami Tensei If... =============================================================================== =============================================================================== I. INTRODUCTION =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Welcome to my Walkthrough/Translation for Shin Megami Tensei If...! I'm Yoshitsune, your guide to the wacky and wonderful world of Megami Tensei (Megaten to its devoted fans). Shin Megami Tensei If... was released by Atlus in 1994 for the Super Famicom (Super NES in North America). It was the third in the Shin Megami Tensei series of games, which is a part of the larger Megami Tensei series. Unlike most RPGs, the Megami Tensei series features a modern-to-futuristic setting as well as the central conceit of summoning demons to help you in battle. Very popular in Japan, only three of the numerous Megaten games have made it to North America - Revelations Series: Persona, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, and Revelations Series: Demon Slayer. As for the translation...my Japanese is abysmally poor (you have no idea), so bear with me and don't take this document as gospel. ;-) I've tried to keep the essential meaning of the translation while working on keeping it natural-sounding. However, some things still sound funky. Feel free to write and correct me if you see something that you know is wrong and to let me know what it should be. (I originally put ? and ! after things I thought and/or knew were wrong, but I didn't want EVERY sentence to have a symbol after it, so my policy's changed: if you see anything that's not accurate, please take a minute to e-mail me with the correct translation.) Updates to this document will range from semi-frequent to never, depending on how much time and inclination I have to work on it...however, I do want to eventually come close to completing the translations, at least enough to make it through and understand the game. So... (crosses fingers) If you'd like to post this file on your web page, please e-mail me for permission! I'll almost certainly give it (unless you have a porno page or have a pay-for-content site) but I'd like to know where it's being posted. The newest version of this file will _always_ be available at GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com) and at my web page, Yoshi's Lair (http://j.students.umkc.edu/jpr4c7). Also - and this is a shameless plug - you should visit my webpage if you're interested in Megaten, especially the Persona subseries. I'm currently working on a translation of the Persona companion book, Persona World Guidance. It's still a work in progress, but it has some interesting info about the world of Persona (which IS the same world as that of Shin Megami Tensei If... but a different part of it). =============================================================================== =============================================================================== II. HISTORY =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 1/13/02 v0.2 released. Added layout and tips for navigating the high school and fixed an error from the last edition. Thanks to Greendom for explaining Pokeberu to me (it means Pocket Bell, as I thought; i.e., cell phone). Note: I'm also working on an item list! (I'd heard some requests for an item list for this game on various message boards.) Until then, I've listed the items that you can find in the walkthrough. The translation isn't any further (I've done a bit more, but I'm still working on editing it). Currently most of my translation time is going to the Persona World Guidance Project. This file will still be updated with translations and tips, but not on any kind of regular basis. 6/28/01 v0.1 released. Covers gameplay basics and walkthrough up to end of Nova's questions. (Not very far, but hopefully more will follow.) To follow in a future release: Demon and item lists, and of course more of the walkthrough! =============================================================================== =============================================================================== III. GAMEPLAY BASICS - MENU =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Press A to access the menu. Your options are: COMP (Computer) MAGIC ITEM STATUS CHANGE A description of each option follows: =============================================================================== COMPUTER =============================================================================== At the beginning, you'll only be able to access the Config option. From here you can select: Battle Message Speed (Normal, Fast, None) Auto Mapping (Fixed, Free) Auto Battle Report (Off, Mode 1, Mode 2) Hold Item/Magic (On, Off) Party Panel (Mark, Word) Note: Mark is pictorial, Word is letters/numbers. Rearrange lets you switch items' positions, or move an item to an empty space in your item list. Organize automatically sorts your items into groups of like items (for example, it will put all your weapons together, all your armor together, etc.). Drop lets you drop items. Just remember, dropped items can't be retrieved. Equip takes you to the Equip screen. From here, you can equip your characters with various weapons and armor. Unequip lets you remove equipment from your characters. =============================================================================== STATUS =============================================================================== This option lets you view a character's status. The status display will differ for the hero and for his/her allies. HERO'S STATUS: The main screen shows your name, picture, HP, MP, demon allies, and basic stats. The stats are at the bottom of the screen, and run as follows: Strength Intelligence Magic Power Vitality Quickness Luck Press Up to bring up your Item inventory. This shows you a list of all the items you currently have. Press Left to bring up your Gem inventory. This shows how many of each Gem you currently have. In the order listed on the screen they are: Amethyst Aquamarine Emerald Onyx Opal Garnet Sapphire Diamond Turquoise Topaz Pearl Ruby Press Right to bring up your Valuables inventory. This contains the event items you need to progress through the game (for example, the PRG Disk that you'll acquire early on). And finally, press A to view your equipped items and any stats that depend on equipment (Attack, for example). ALLIES' STATUS: Their main status screen follows the same pattern as the hero's, above. The only real difference is that they don't have a listing for demon allies. Also, you can only press Down to view that ally's magic or press A to view their equipped items/modified stats. =============================================================================== CHANGE =============================================================================== Use this option to rearrange your party. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== IV. GAMEPLAY BASICS - BATTLE =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Coming soon! =============================================================================== =============================================================================== V. WALKTHROUGH =============================================================================== =============================================================================== At the title screen, push Start to be taken to the saved game screen. From here you can select "New Game," "Load" or "Save" (the last is not selectable at this point). The options are in English, so you shouldn't have any problem with them. After selecting New Game, you will meet the fortune-telling computer, Nova. She'll ask you a series of questions: =============================================================================== NOVA: Though I am a computer, I am an expert at telling fortunes. You are currently in my computer space. Do you wish for me to tell your fortune? Well then...please tell me your gender: Gender? Male Female Please tell me your name: =============================================================================== Now you get to enter your name. The English characters are on the right, or you can enter your name in Japanese hiragana or katakana. Press the A button to enter a letter and the B button to backspace. Select "End" when you're done. For the purposes of this walkthrough, I chose "female" and entered "Tamaki" as my name. (This is the "official" version of the main character that carries over into the Persona series. For those of you who have played the American versions of Persona or Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, she appears in them as "Tammy.") =============================================================================== Your name is Tamaki, correct? Yes No Now, please answer the questions I'm about to ask you: Q. Do you like video games? Love them Like them Dislike them Never played before Q. What are your after-school activities? Sports Club Culture Club Going home Don't know Q. If your teacher assigns you homework, do you do it? I do it correctly Sometimes I forget Never do it Don't know Q. How often do you forget things? You have greater power than most people. But your soul has been wounded and so you've lost some of this ability. I can see this great power of life. Your great worry is coming near. It is reversing direction instead of progressing, but your spirit can repair it. =============================================================================== Nova will disappear, and a mysterious boy in a spotlight will take her place. =============================================================================== Boy: ...You are in the world of cherry blossoms. I am the most skillful person of our era - completely unlike those ordinary humans. But now I have obtained enough power, knowledge and talent to interest the ruler of the Demon World. The Emperor of the Demon-Gods has invited me to become a denizen of that world. =============================================================================== The boy will disappear, laughing maniacally. Then your character will wake up in school, just before the ground shakes and the sky turns purple. Along with your friend Yumi, you decide to investigate. =============================================================================== PART 1 - KARUKOZAKA HIGH SCHOOL Items: Pickel, Metal Bat, Helmet x2, Shoulder Pads x2, Back Pads x2, Rollerblades x2 Enemies: Pixie, Poltergeist, Zombie Dog =============================================================================== You begin directly outside your 2nd floor classroom (2-D). First explore the other classrooms on the 2nd floor, then head up to the 4th floor. Here's a list of the various rooms and their importance: 1ST FLOOR Entrance - Enveloped in a weird purple glow. You can't do anything in here. Music Room - Here you can talk to a student, Reiko. I don't know yet whether the conversation has anything to do with the larger plot, but it can't hurt. President's Office - Here you can talk to the school president. Medical Office - Go here to have your wounds healed by the school nurse. - Filled with computers. Talk to the student here to save. Storeroom - Talk to the two students, and answer Yes to get the Pickel. Gym - Engulfed in the purple glow. You can go far enough in to see the strangely decorated inside of the gym, but otherwise there's not much to do here. Club Room - Walk through here to get to the four school clubs: Baseball, Football, Hockey and Sumo. Baseball Club - Answer yes to the student to get the Metal Bat and two Helmets. Football Club - Answer yes to the student to get two Shoulder Pads. Hockey Club - Answer yes to the student to get two Back Pads. Sumo Club - Answer yes to the student to get two sets of Rollerblades. (What do Rollerblades have to do with Sumo anyway?) 2ND FLOOR 2-A, 2-B, 2-C - Normal classrooms; not much interesting. 2-D - Your classroom (you start outside of it). 3RD FLOOR 2-E, 2-F, 2-G, 2-H - Normal classrooms. 4TH FLOOR Nothing but the weird purple glow. You can't do anything up here. Note: I haven't listed the stairs up and down - they should be self-explanatory. After going to the fourth floor, go down to the first floor and visit the gym. Next visit the storeroom and the club rooms and pick up the items there. Be sure to equip them on your characters! Then visit the entrance. Here you WILL find monsters, but now that you have weapons and armor, you should be able to defeat them relatively easily. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== VI. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Q. Where can I get Shin Megami Tensei If...? A. Since it's a Super Famicom game, you may have a hard time getting it. However, Atlus is re-releasing the game in Japan for the PlayStation, so you can import it - if it follows the trend of the other Shin Megami Tensei remakes, the text will be exactly the same. Q. Will the PSX version of this game be released in North America? A. It's unlikely...its old-school gameplay and dated graphics make it a bad choice for localization. Plus most fans of Megami Tensei (myself included) would rather Atlus of America set their resources to giving us an English- language version of Persona 2: Innocent Sin (hope springs eternal...). However, stranger things HAVE happened... Q. What does Shin Megami Tensei mean? A. "True Goddess Rebirth" or "True Goddess Reincarnation." Q. What's with your weird translations? It just doesn't sound right to me. A. As I mention above, my Japanese isn't that great. So if you have a better grasp of Japanese than I do, and you notice something mistranslated, PLEASE e-mail me your corrections! You'll be listed in the Acknowledgments section, and you'll also have that warm fuzzy feeling knowing that people are understanding Shin Megami Tensei If... more accurately because of you. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== IX. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Many thanks to: Greendom, who explained Pokeberu to me (it means Pocket Bell, as I thought - a portable phone). Re-Miel, whose outstanding Shin Megami Tensei translation inspired me to do the same for If... Atlus of Japan, for creating such a cool game (and then re-releasing it!) ===============================================================================
